Ravi Patel Joins Richmond BizSense Panel on the Future of Sports Tourism
Ravi Patel, CEO of SINA Hospitality, SINA Sports Travel, and SINA Experiences, was a featured panelist at Richmond BizSense’s newest event, The Future of Sports Tourism, held at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. The event drew a record crowd and brought together regional leaders who are shaping one of the most competitive areas of economic development in Virginia.
A Regional Race for Tournaments and Facilities
Across the region, localities are in what has become an arms race to land the biggest tournaments and build the best facilities. The reason is clear: tournaments bring teams and families who fill hotel rooms, eat at local restaurants, and spend money in the community, often over several days at a time. The panel explored what it takes to compete for these lucrative economic development drivers and what helps a destination win repeat events.
Lowering the Cost of Tournament Travel
Patel brought attention to a part of the conversation that often gets overlooked: what it costs teams and families to travel to an event in the first place.
“Traditional tournament housing and travel models can carry 15 to 20 percent in combined commissions and rebates. Through SINA Sports Travel’s integrated approach, our travel booking website for sports teams and their families, we can structure qualifying events at a blended rate as low as 10 percent.”
He explained that SINA’s structure is what makes those savings possible.
“Because our family-owned company operates across hospitality, sports travel, and destination development, our travel booking website, SINASportsTravel.com, is able to save teams and families money on their hotel reservations, no matter the size of the group or event. We don’t just want to book their room block. We want to help build bigger tournaments while saving people money.”
For tournament organizers, lower lodging costs can make an event more attractive to teams. For families, it means more of their travel budget stays in their pocket.
Spotlight on the SINA Sports Complex in Colonial Heights
The discussion also turned to the recently announced SINA Sports Complex, a $180 million multi-use sports, hospitality, and entertainment destination in the City of Colonial Heights, Virginia. Approved by City Council, the project will transform nearly 38 acres near Southpark Mall into a regional sports tourism hub.
At full build-out, the development will include:
- Six multi-purpose synthetic turf championship fields
- Three premium-branded hotels
- Full-service dining and retail
- Residential living and community gathering spaces
The project is projected to generate approximately $50 million in annual economic output once fully operational and to support an estimated 1,025 to 1,625 construction jobs during its multi-phase buildout. SINA is also working with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to remediate the site, which is classified as a Brownfield, and turn it into a lasting community asset.
Putting Colonial Heights on the Sports Tourism Map
SINA’s goal for the Sports Complex goes beyond jobs and tax revenue. The company wants Colonial Heights to become a locality that sports teams and families think of first when they plan outdoor sports events. To get there, SINA has added team members with active, hands-on experience in sports tourism, expertise that will help make the development even more successful from day one.
With fields, hotels, dining, and team travel booking all connected under one family-owned company, SINA is positioned to deliver the kind of complete tournament experience that keeps teams and families coming back.
